GELE IN PICTURES

Fashion is a subtle yet critical form of self-expression. We convey our history and culture as well as present dispositions and mindsets in the patterns, designs, fabrics and colours of the clothes we wear, as well as the ways in which we wear them.

In every culture, fashion or clothing is just as important as any other facet of society. Each ethnic group, with their distinct culture across the length and breadth of the country, represents themselves uniquely in the way they dress.

Tying a piece of cloth around the head is not specific to any one cultural group even though every tribe calls it different names. Women have worn and continue to wear some type of fabric head covering in many societies. In Nigeria they are known as Gele, and can be rather large and elaborate. Although gele can be worn for day-to-day activities, the elaborate ceremonial ones (usually made of a material that is firmer than regular cloth) are worn to weddings, special events, and church activities.

It’s an element in the daily living of an African woman. The process of tying may seem tedious but the beauty of the Gele is its own reward which is why we’ve got these fabulous gele in pictures to glam you up.
