Hair Types: An Essential Factor In Determining Right Products and Hairstyles For One’s Hair

Knowing one’s hair type is essential in Hair Care management. It is an important key to determine the right product and hairstyles for one’s hair. The Hair texture category was developed by Andre Walker and divided into four types.

Type 1 hair is generally straight and can be classified into three segments 1A, 1B and 1C.

The Type 2 hair type is wavy and also divided into 2A, 2B and 2C. The 2A type is fine and thin. It lacks definition and volume, hence its best to use lighter hair product such as gels and mousses to maintain curls.

Type 2B is straight at the root and S-shaped waves with more definition from the mid-length down to the ends, best tip is to plop 2B hair when it is freshly washed.

Type 2C has thick defined waves, best tip is to diffuse the hair while it’s wet but not soaking wet if more volume is desired.

Type 3 hair type is Curly with a defined “S” shaped curl pattern. It is also divided into 3A which is very shiny and loose. The 3B hair type is generally dense, best tip is to use styling milk if more definition is desired. Type 3C has the highest amount of volume with tight curls but has the most shrinkage, best tip is to stretch and enhance gently without heat

Type 4 hair type is commonly found in Black Women. It is “Kinky” and full of tight coils. It is also divided into 4A, AB and 4C.

Type 4A is full of tight coils. It has an “S” pattern when stretched best tip is to use shea butter to get twists. Type 4B has less defined pattern of curls and looks more like a “Z” as the hair bends with very sharp angles, best tip is to use coconut oil to retain scalp’s natural chemistry.

Type 4C hair is tightly packed and prone to more shrinkage, best tip is to cream regularly.
